Where to watchFull story — spoilers ahead.
In 1947, banker Andy Dufresne receives two life sentences for murdering his wife and her lover, despite maintaining his innocence. At Shawshank, he befriends Red, who supplies a rock hammer and movie-star posters.
Andy survives assaults by inmates. His financial expertise earns protection from the guards and work in the library. He expands its collection while secretly laundering Warden Norton's corrupt earnings through a fabricated identity, Randall Stephens.
Paroled librarian Brooks cannot adjust to freedom and kills himself. Andy defies prison rules by broadcasting opera, insisting that hope matters.
New inmate Tommy reveals that another prisoner confessed to the murders blamed on Andy. Norton refuses to reopen the case, has Tommy killed, and confines Andy to solitary to protect his scheme.
Andy later tells Red about his dream of Mexico and a hidden package near Buxton. Then he disappears: behind his poster lies a tunnel excavated over nineteen years. He escapes through sewage, withdraws Norton's money as Stephens, and exposes the corruption. Hadley is arrested; Norton shoots himself.
After parole, Red finds Andy's money and letter in Buxton. He travels to Mexico, where the friends reunite on a beach.
