The Bissman Building is a nineteenth-century commercial building on North Main Street in downtown Mansfield, Ohio. Peter Bissman commissioned it in 1886 for an expanded wholesale grocery business. Its distinctive Gothic character makes it recognizable among the city's historic streetscapes. In The Shawshank Redemption, its facade becomes the Brewer Hotel, the lodging associated with Brooks after his release from prison. The building also represents the front office of the Portland Daily Bugle newspaper. The hotel room itself was staged at the Ohio State Reformatory, so the exterior and interior seen in that storyline belong to different real locations.
Confirm access before visiting. Some exteriors are public; interiors and homes may not be.
