Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge occupies the southwestern end of Saint Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its long sandy shoreline and Caribbean waters provide the setting for the final reunion in The Shawshank Redemption. Although the story places Andy and Red in Zihuatanejo on Mexico's Pacific coast, the scene was actually filmed here. The beach represents the freedom they have imagined throughout the film, creating a visual change from the enclosed prison spaces. Beyond its screen appearance, Sandy Point is a protected habitat with particular importance for nesting leatherback sea turtles and the conservation of its coastal environment.
Confirm access before visiting. Some exteriors are public; interiors and homes may not be.
