The Ohio State Reformatory is a historic former prison in Mansfield, Ohio, with an imposing exterior that gives the complex the appearance of a stone castle. Construction began in 1886 and continued into the early twentieth century; the institution operated until 1990. In The Shawshank Redemption, the reformatory represents the fictional Shawshank prison in Maine. Its exterior and surviving interior spaces helped establish the film's oppressive setting, although other prison sequences used purpose-built sets. The preserved building now serves as a historic attraction, connecting the real institution's history with the film that made it internationally recognizable.
Confirm access before visiting. Some exteriors are public; interiors and homes may not be.
