Ted Lasso

The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Ted Lasso is an American college-football coach with a mustache, a stack of biscuits, and no soccer experience. Rebecca Welton has just inherited AFC Richmond, a West London club, in a divorce. She hires Ted to fail on purpose, as revenge on her ex-husband Rupert, who loved the team more than he loved her. Ted flies over anyway and treats the locker room like a group of people who have not been asked how they are.

Season 1 is the joke becoming a team. Ted wins Jamie Tartt, the gifted striker who has been trained to be a brat, by refusing to write him off. He wins Roy Kent, the aging captain with a growl, by treating anger as information. He wins Nate Shelley, the kit man nobody sees, by asking for his opinion. Coach Beard is the silent partner who already knows Ted’s whole heart. Rebecca’s plan starts to rot because Ted is decent and the club is her father’s ghost. She confesses. Ted stays. Richmond still goes down a division, which would be failure if the show believed tables were the only score.

Season 2 is success as a new kind of pressure. They bring in Dr. Sharon Fieldstone, a sports psychologist, and the locker room has to learn a language besides banter. Ted’s own panic attacks, ignored for years and tied to a father who died by suicide, finally surface on the sideline. Nate is promoted and then poisoned by the promotion; he wants respect so badly he starts taking it from the man who gave him a chance. Rebecca learns she might want to build something instead of burn it. Keeley, who began as Jamie’s girlfriend and became the club’s most competent adult, builds a career and a romance with Roy that has to survive two people growing at different speeds. Sam, Isaac, Colin, and the rest of the squad stop being a chorus.

Season 3 is the hangover and the repair. Rupert buys a rival club and turns the season into a personal referendum. Nate coaches against the men who made him and has to decide whether cruelty is the same as becoming real. Richmond has a chance to win something that would look, from the outside, like the point. Ted has to decide whether home is Kansas — his son, his ex-wife, the life he left to be needed elsewhere — or the people who finally know him. The show lets him choose the son without treating the club as a waste. Rebecca becomes an owner who wants a future that is not a weapon. Roy becomes a coach. Jamie becomes a teammate. Nate comes back through the smallest door, which is the only kind the series believes in.

The central relationships are the plot. Ted and Rebecca are not a romance. They are two people teaching each other that kindness is not naivete. Ted and Roy are a translation problem that becomes a friendship. Rebecca and Keeley are the women who keep the institution human. The team is a workplace sitcom until it is a study of men who were never given permission to be sad.

Season 3 ended with Ted going home to Kansas to be a father. That was not the end of the show.

Season 4, which premiered on August 5, 2026 and is still airing weekly through early October, brings him back. Rebecca, Keeley, Beard, Higgins, and Roy are part of a new climb: AFC Richmond’s second-division women’s team, the Lady Greyhounds. The resources are smaller. The locker room is not the men’s palace. Some of Richmond treats the new side as a drain on the club they already love. Ted has to build a squad from scratch, with new players and the same old habit of taking people seriously. The season is about leaping before you look — and about whether kindness still works when the pitch is muddier and the crowd is not sure it wants you there.

Ted Lasso is still a comedy about decency that does not pretend decency is easy. People relapse. People are cruel. The punchline is usually someone choosing to stay in the room. If you have never watched it, start with the biscuits. Stay for the moment a joke turns into a man asking for help.
