The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Ethan Hunt is the IMF agent who cannot choose the clean option if a stranger might die. Fallout opens by reminding you what that costs. In Berlin, a buy for stolen plutonium cores goes wrong when Luther is taken hostage. Ethan lets the cores go rather than let his teammate die. The material vanishes. A terrorist philosopher named John Lark wants to use it to remake the world through catastrophe. Ethan has to get the cores back before the idea becomes a city on fire.

The CIA does not trust him. They send August Walker, a hulking specialist who smiles like a man who already wrote the report. Ethan’s old ally William Brandt is gone from this chapter; in his place are familiar ghosts. Ilsa Faust, the MI6 agent who keeps saving him and leaving, is hunting Lark too. Erica Sloane wants results, not ethics. Benji and Luther are the friends who keep climbing into the next impossible machine because Ethan asked.

The plot moves like a series of locked rooms. Paris is a chase that ends in a nightclub bathroom fight — later, not the opening — and turns the room into a crime scene. A meeting with the Broker, the White Widow, forces Ethan to pretend to be Lark while the real Lark may be standing in the same room. A detainee named Solomon Lane — the ghost from an earlier war — becomes both bait and key. Ethan has to break him out of an armored convoy because Lane knows how the plutonium is meant to be used.

Then the movie becomes personal. Julia, Ethan’s ex-wife, the woman he left to keep alive, is working as a doctor in a place the bombs will not spare. Walker is not the CIA’s watchdog. He is Lark. He has been inside the mission the whole time, measuring Ethan’s famous conscience so he can use it. The betrayal is physical: a helicopter, a cliff, a fight on a rope over a drop that does not care who is right.

There are three bombs, three cities, and a window measured in minutes. Luther and Benji cut wires in a village medical camp while Ethan flies a stolen helicopter into a mountain to stop Walker from being the man who decides the future. Ilsa and the White Widow play their own last cards. Lane ends up back in a box. Walker does not get up.

Ethan lives. Julia lives. The marriage does not come back, and the film is wise enough not to pretend it should. What comes back is the team, standing in the wreckage of another world they barely saved.

Fallout is a spy movie about the ethics of a reflex. Ethan’s weakness is that he will not let one person die to save millions. The plot keeps punishing that reflex and then, at the end, suggesting it is also the only reason anyone is still here. Walker wanted a cleaner math. The movie sides with the mess.
