Skyfall

The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

James Bond is supposed to be a blunt instrument, not a man with a childhood. Skyfall begins by reminding him he can die anyway. On a mission in Istanbul he is chasing a hard drive that holds the names of NATO agents buried in the field. His partner, Eve, is ordered to take a shot she cannot guarantee. She hits Bond. He falls from a train into a river and is declared dead.

He is not dead. He is drinking, gambling, and rotting in a beach town because, for the first time, nobody needs him. Then someone bombs MI6. M, the woman who raised him as a weapon, is under political attack. A new bureaucrat named Mallory wants the old ways retired. Bond comes home looking older than the job description and barely passes the tests that used to be a formality.

The thief is Raoul Silva, a former MI6 agent M left behind in Hong Kong when the numbers said he was expendable. Imprisoned and tortured, he tried to bite down on a cyanide capsule that did not work the way it should have. He survived as a ruined grin and a man who learned to treat computer networks the way Bond treats a pistol. Silva wants M to see what her arithmetic cost. He also wants the list, because leaking names is how you make a secret service look like a joke.

Bond follows the trail through a casino, a woman named Sévérine who is already Silva’s prisoner, and an abandoned island of broken servers. He captures Silva too easily. That is the point. Silva wanted to be inside. He escapes MI6, attacks a public inquiry, and nearly kills M in a room full of people who were there to scold her.

Bond does the unfashionable thing. He takes M off the grid and drives her to Skyfall, the empty Scottish estate where he grew up and where his parents are buried. The house is not a fortress. It is a memory with a gamekeeper, Kincade, and a few old shotguns. They wire it like a trap and wait.

Silva arrives with a small army because this was never about winning a fair fight. He wants the mother and the favorite son in the same burning house. The estate falls. M is wounded. Bond hunts Silva through chapel grounds and puts a knife in him. M dies in the chapel anyway, asking Bond to believe the work was worth the people it used.

The last scenes hand the office to Mallory, now the new M, and return Bond to a rebuilt London desk. Q is there. Moneypenny is there, no longer in the field. The ritual is restored. The cost is not.

Skyfall is an origin story told at the end of a life. Bond is not a new man. He is an orphan who keeps choosing the same job because the job is the only home that survived. Silva is the warning of what happens when that home throws you away. M’s death is the bill.
