Inception

The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Dom Cobb does not rob banks. He robs sleep. While a mark is unconscious, Cobb and his team build a dream, walk through it, and steal the secret the person will not say out loud. The job is called extraction. It has made him rich and unemployable. He is wanted. He cannot go home to his children.

A Japanese energy executive named Saito offers him the opposite assignment. Plant an idea in the mind of Robert Fischer, the heir to a rival empire, so Fischer will break up his father’s company and believe the thought was his own. That job is called inception. Most people in Cobb’s line of work say it cannot be done. An idea has to feel born, not delivered. Saito says he can make the murder charge against Cobb disappear if it works. Cobb takes it because it is the only door back to his kids.

He builds a team the way you build a heist crew. Arthur is the point man, precise and unimpressed. Eames can become other people inside a dream. Yusuf mixes the sedative that lets them stack dreams on dreams. Ariadne, a gifted student Cobb recruits as an architect, designs the spaces so Fischer does not notice the walls are fake. Cobb cannot design them himself. His dead wife, Mal, keeps walking out of his subconscious and wrecking the plan.

Mal is the wound under every job. Cobb and Mal spent years in limbo, a raw dream-state where minutes upstairs become decades. They built a life there. Then Cobb planted an idea in her mind so she would agree to wake up: that their world was not real. It worked too well. Back in waking life, Mal still believed she had to die to get home. Her death is why Cobb cannot see his children. It is also why he cannot trust his own mind.

The Fischer job has three dream levels, each slower than the one above. The first is a rainy city where the team kidnaps Fischer and begins to turn him against his godfather, Browning. The second is a hotel, where they stage a fake rescue so Fischer will trust them. The third is a snow fortress that stands in for the safe in Fischer’s grief. Under that is limbo. Saito is shot on the first level and starts dying in slow motion all the way down. If they fail, some of them will wake up. Others will be lost.

Fischer’s father was cold. The team uses that. They do not tell Fischer to destroy the company. They let him find a private meaning: that his father wanted him to be his own man. The inception has to feel like love, or it will not stick.

Mal appears on the lowest level and stabs Cobb’s plan through the heart. Ariadne and Fischer go on without him. Cobb stays to find Saito and to face the version of Mal he has been keeping alive. He tells her she is a shade. He lets her go. Then he and Saito, old men in a ruined dream, remember the kick that will bring them back.

The last image is a spinning top on a table while Cobb walks out to his children. The film will not confirm whether the top falls. What it does confirm is the cost of the job. Cobb wanted an idea planted in someone else. The idea that nearly destroyed him was one he planted in the person he loved.
