The story

Harry Potter sleeps in a cupboard under the stairs and does not know why strange things happen around him. The Dursleys keep him small on purpose. They have a son, Dudley, who gets two bedrooms and all the attention. Harry gets a cupboard and the feeling that he is dangerous for reasons nobody will explain.

On his eleventh birthday a giant named Hagrid kicks the door in and tells him the truth. He is a wizard. His parents, James and Lily, were murdered by a dark wizard named Voldemort. The curse that killed them should have killed Harry too. It did not. That is why his forehead has a scar and why the wizarding world already knows his name. He has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Hagrid takes him into a London that has a hidden layer. Harry sees a bank run by goblins, a street of shops, and a wand that chooses him. For the first time, the world fits. At the train station he has to run a luggage trolley at a barrier between platforms nine and ten. On the train he meets Ron Weasley, who has a family big enough to share, and Hermione Granger, who has read every book and is not yet anyone’s friend.

Hogwarts sorts him into Gryffindor. The Sorting Hat considers Slytherin, the house of the boy who became Voldemort, and Harry begs it not to. That small refusal is the first time he chooses who he is.

The year is school and mystery at once. Harry learns to fly, joins the Quidditch team, and gets in trouble with Severus Snape, a teacher who seems to hate him on sight. He also learns that something is moving through the castle toward a hidden object: the Philosopher’s Stone, which can make elixir of life and more gold than a person should want. A three-headed dog guards a trapdoor. A unicorn dies in the forest. A teacher named Quirrell stammers and sweats and is not what he appears to be.

Harry, Ron, and Hermione become friends by surviving a troll and then by deciding that grown-ups are too slow. They follow the mystery through the trapdoor: flying keys, a giant chess game that costs Ron, a logic puzzle, and a man who has been sharing his body with the wizard who killed Harry’s parents. Voldemort is a face on the back of Quirrell’s head, hungry and unfinished.

Harry is not stronger. He is loved. His mother’s protection lives in his skin. Quirrell cannot touch him without burning. The stone is safe. Dumbledore, the headmaster, tells Harry what he can bear to hear and holds back the rest.

The first year ends with a feast, a house cup won at the last second, and a boy who no longer has to sleep in a cupboard — at least until summer. The story is an origin and a warning. Harry has friends now. He also has an enemy who will not stay gone. The cupboard was never the whole of his life. It was only the first room.
