The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Hawkins, Indiana, November 1983. Will Byers is biking home from a Dungeons & Dragons night and vanishes into the dark between streetlights. The official story is thin. His mother, Joyce, will not accept it. She starts seeing lights blink in the house and hanging Christmas bulbs so her missing son can talk in yes and no. Jonathan, the older brother, takes photographs because looking is the only power he has. Sheriff Jim Hopper, who has already lost a daughter, starts searching the wrong woods on purpose.

Will’s friends — Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair — refuse the funeral. In the forest they find a girl with a shaved head, a tattoo that reads 011, and the ability to move things with her mind. She is Eleven, a child the Department of Energy raised in a laboratory on the edge of town. The lab opened a door into the Upside Down, a rotting copy of Hawkins full of spores and a creature the kids name after their game: the Demogorgon. Season 1 is a missing-child story that becomes a monster story and then a government-cover-up story. The kids get Will back. The door does not really close. Hopper hides Eleven in a cabin because the state has already proven it cannot be trusted with her.

Season 2 is the year after. Will is home and not home. Something from the other side is using him as a receiver. A shadow creature, the Mind Flayer, wants a host and a town. New kids arrive: Max Mayfield, who will not be talked down to, and a lab boy named Eight who makes Eleven question the story of her own escape. Hopper tries to be a father and a cop at once. Joyce tries to be a mother in a house that keeps becoming a radio. The season ends with a closed gate and a dance that feels like a reprieve, not a victory.

Season 3 moves to the summer of 1985 and pretends, for a while, to be about mall jobs and first romances. Starcourt Mall is the new heart of Hawkins. Under the floor it is a Soviet machine built to reopen the door. The Mind Flayer comes back through rats and then through people. Billy, Max’s stepbrother, becomes a warning about what the town does to angry boys. Hopper and Joyce stop being only guardians and become a couple with no time. Eleven loses her powers in the fight and Hopper is lost in the blast, or so the government tells everyone.

Season 4 splits the party and makes the horror personal. Eleven is in California, powerless, bullied, and trying to be a girl instead of a weapon. Hawkins teenagers start dying in ways that look like suicide until the clocks start breaking. The killer is Vecna, who is also Henry Creel, who is also One: the first child the lab broke, the thing Eleven once threw into the dark. Eddie Munson becomes the town’s latest monster because Hawkins needs someone living to blame. Max becomes Vecna’s chosen target. Steve, Nancy, Robin, and Dustin do the kind of bravery that used to belong only to the younger kids. The finale cracks Hawkins open. The Upside Down is no longer under the town. It is in it.

The series keeps one argument going. Friendship is a technology that works when institutions fail. The Party, Joyce, Hopper, the older teens — they win by staying a group. The lab, the military, the town gossip, and later Vecna all treat people as material. Eleven’s power is spectacular. Her real arc is whether she is allowed to be a person who wants a childhood after being used as a key.

Season 5, the final season, is the town finishing what 1983 started. The kids are not kids. The rift is not a secret. Vecna’s plan is to merge the Abyss with Hawkins and take the world with it. Holly Wheeler and other children are pulled into that dark. The Party, the older teens, Joyce, Hopper, Murray, and even Kali come back for one last stand. Eleven, Kali, and Max attack Henry in his mind. The others climb into the Abyss, find the children, and learn that the “Pain Tree” is the Mind Flayer. Joyce is the one who finally ends Vecna with a blade. A bomb collapses the Upside Down. Kali dies. Eleven appears to stay behind in the collapsing world so she cannot be used to make more children like her.

Eighteen months later, in 1989, the friends graduate. Hopper proposes to Joyce. Mike tells a last Dungeons & Dragons story in which Kali’s dying illusion let Eleven slip away to live somewhere quiet. The show does not confirm it. It lets the group — and the audience — choose what to believe.

The series is complete. A boy vanished. A girl escaped. A town learned it had a basement reality. The friends kept choosing each other until that basement was gone, or at least until they could live as if it was.
