The story

Birmingham, 1919. Tommy Shelby comes home from France with a genius for planning and a head that will not go quiet. He and his brothers — Arthur, who drinks to keep the war down, and John, who would rather fight than think — run a betting gang in Small Heath. They sew razor blades into the peaks of their caps. They want more than street corners. They want racetracks, whiskey, political cover, and a seat at a table that was not built for them.

Season 1 is the first climb. A stolen crate of guns falls into Tommy’s hands and becomes leverage. Inspector Campbell, a Belfast policeman with his own religion of order, is sent to retrieve them. Grace Burgess arrives as a barmaid who is not a barmaid. Tommy falls in love with her anyway, which is the first time the planner misreads a room that matters. Aunt Polly is the family’s other brain, the woman who kept the Shelbys alive while the men were in trenches. Ada, the socialist sister, tries to live outside the blood and never quite can. By the end of the season Tommy has the guns, a bigger name, and a wound where trust used to be.

Season 2 moves them into London against Darby Sabini, a bigger gangster in a nicer suit. The Shelbys learn that leaving Birmingham is not the same as leaving the war. Arthur is given responsibility he cannot hold without becoming monstrous. Tommy starts dealing with Winston Churchill’s people, who will use a street gang and call it patriotism. Grace returns as something more complicated than a spy. The season is about whether a family business can survive success.

Season 3 is marriage, a deal with White Russians, and a bombing that makes the war personal again. Tommy marries Grace in a moment that looks like peace. The peace does not last. An assassination plot, a child, a funeral — the company becomes an international rumor. Tommy starts seeing enemies in every drawing room because some of them are real and some of them are the gas still in his lungs.

Season 4 is New York and a vendetta. Luca Changretta comes for the Shelbys because old blood debts do not care about Tommy’s new manners. John pays. The family answers in the only language it trusts. Season 5 makes Tommy a Member of Parliament, which is both a joke and a promotion. Oswald Mosley’s fascists are the new suit in the old fight. A depression that looks like strategy sits under Tommy’s speeches. He is winning in public and coming apart in private. Polly sees it. Arthur sees it and drinks. The country is choosing a worse future and asking men like Tommy to help build it.

Season 6 is the endgame. Opium, a missing sister’s ghost, a Boston connection, and a man trying to write an ending that is not another shooting. Tommy has more money and less family. He plays one last long game against forces that are no longer neighborhood-sized. The finale lets him stand in a field with a gun and a choice about whether the story of Tommy Shelby ends as a corpse or as a rumor that he walked away. The show chooses the rumor, which is the kindest thing it has ever done for him.

The series is about class, trauma, and the way a street gang becomes a company. Tommy’s intelligence is real. So is his illness. He keeps solving problems that he also creates. Polly is the conscience until she is the casualty. Arthur wants to be good and is used as a weapon. Ada keeps trying to be the civilian and keeps getting pulled back to identify bodies. Lizzie, who starts as a woman the men treat as furniture, becomes the wife who has to live with the legend.

Peaky Blinders is not a documentary of Birmingham and it is not a superhero story about clever criminals. It is a six-season portrait of a man who came back from a war and decided the peace was just another fight. If you have never watched it, start with the cap and the first plan. Stay long enough to see the plan become a country, and the country become too big for one family to hold.
