The Godfather

The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Don Vito Corleone sits in a dark office on his daughter’s wedding day and listens to requests. He is the head of a New York crime family that works like a crooked local government: favors, loyalty, a kiss on the ring. He will help a baker, a singer, a funeral director. He will not help Virgil Sollozzo, a heroin man who wants the family’s political cover. That refusal starts a war.

Vito’s youngest son, Michael, is a Marine who sat out the business. He comes to the wedding in a uniform with Kay Adams and tells her these stories as if they belong to someone else. He is the son who went to college and to war and is supposed to become a senator, not a button man. Kay believes him. For a while, so does he.

Then gunmen shoot his father in the street. Michael sits by the hospital bed, notices the guards have been sent away, and understands that the civilian life is over. He moves Vito’s bed himself. He stands outside with a baker and a trembling Enzo and pretends they are armed. The boy who wanted out has already chosen a side.

He murders Sollozzo and a corrupt police captain in a restaurant. The family hides him in Sicily, where he marries a local girl, Apollonia, and tries to live like a man without a last name. The war follows him anyway. Apollonia is killed by a car bomb meant for him. When Michael comes home he is no longer the son who wanted out. He is the one who can finish what the others started.

Sonny, the oldest, is too hot for the long game. He is ambushed at a tollbooth after a family fight that should have stayed in the house. Fredo is too weak. Tom Hagen is a lawyer, not a wartime consigliere. Vito, once he can walk again, makes peace because he has already seen the ending. He knows Michael will have to be the one. He also knows what that will cost.

Michael marries Kay and talks about the family becoming legitimate in five years. He does not mean it the way she hears it. He moves against the heads of the other families on the day he stands as godfather to his sister Connie’s child. Baptism and murder run in parallel. When the doors close, the men who thought Michael was a college boy are dead, and Tessio, who sold him, is walking to a car he will not come back from.

Connie screams that he killed her husband. Kay asks him if it is true. He looks her in the eye and says no. She wants to believe him. Then the capos enter the office and kiss his hand. The door shuts on her.

The movie is about the moment a man chooses the chair. Vito built a world where love and crime use the same vocabulary. Michael learns the vocabulary too well. By the end he has saved the family as a business and lost it as a family. That is the tragedy, and it is complete.
