Rocky

The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

Rocky Balboa earns little from boxing and collects debts in Philadelphia. He courts Adrian, a shy pet-shop employee whose brother Paulie is his friend. Their relationship gives him companionship and confidence.

When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed loses his scheduled opponent, he chooses an unknown local challenger for a publicity-friendly title fight. Rocky's nickname, the Italian Stallion, catches his attention. Rocky accepts the opportunity.

Veteran trainer Mickey offers help. Rocky initially resents his earlier neglect, then agrees. He runs through Philadelphia and punches hanging beef at Paulie's workplace, gradually building the stamina he needs.

Before the bout, Rocky admits to Adrian that victory seems unlikely. His goal is to survive all fifteen rounds and prove he is more than a nobody.

Apollo expects an easy exhibition, but Rocky knocks him down in the opening round. The champion responds fiercely. Both men suffer as Rocky keeps fighting despite his swollen eye and exhaustion.

Rocky lasts until the final bell. Apollo wins by split decision, retaining his title. Rocky calls for Adrian instead of dwelling on the result. She reaches him in the ring, and they declare their love: he has achieved the personal victory he wanted.
