The story

Full story — spoilers ahead.

John Wick has already left his old life behind.

Once one of the most feared assassins in the criminal underworld, John walked away after falling in love with Helen. For a while, he gets the peaceful life he wanted.

Then Helen dies.

Knowing John will be alone, she arranges one final gift for him: a puppy named Daisy. The dog gives John something to care for while he struggles with losing his wife.

That small piece of peace disappears when John meets Iosef Tarasov, the reckless son of Russian crime boss Viggo Tarasov.

Iosef wants John's 1969 Ford Mustang.

John refuses to sell it.

That night, Iosef and his men break into John's home, attack him, steal the car and kill Daisy.

They have no idea who they have just attacked.

When Viggo discovers what his son has done, he immediately understands the danger. John once worked for him, and his reputation was so terrifying that even powerful criminals treated his name with respect.

John was the man sent to complete impossible jobs.

Now he is coming for Viggo's son.

John digs up the weapons and gold he buried beneath his home and returns to the secret world he thought he had escaped.

That world revolves around places like the Continental Hotel, where assassins stay under strict rules, contracts are paid in gold coins and murder is forbidden on hotel grounds.

John learns that Iosef is hiding at the Red Circle nightclub.

He enters alone.

Moving through guards, underground rooms and the crowded club, John gets close to Iosef but fails to stop him from escaping.

Viggo responds by placing a contract on John's life.

Suddenly, John is not only hunting Iosef. Other assassins are hunting him.

But John keeps moving.

He attacks the foundations of Viggo's criminal empire, destroying money, information and people that Viggo depends on. Eventually, Viggo realizes that protecting his son could cost him everything.

John finally reaches Iosef.

The protection, money and power surrounding him are no longer enough.

But killing Iosef does not end the conflict.

Viggo retaliates, and John's old friend Marcus becomes another casualty of the war.

John goes after Viggo one final time.

Their fight ends in the rain, with John destroying the last major connection between himself and the organization he once served.

Badly wounded, John enters an animal clinic.

There he notices a dog scheduled to be put down.

He opens the cage and takes the dog with him.

The story began with John losing the final gift Helen gave him.

It ends with John choosing to save another life and walking forward instead of returning home alone.
